Top Gen-Y-Friendly Companies

Much has been written about Gen-Y entering the workplace as employers look for recruiting and retention strategies that meet this generation’s unique expectations and goals. This their annual study of Gen-Y friendly companies in greater Chicago, Brill Street + Company identified the top 50 firms offering career opportunties for the newest generation to enter the workplace.

Brill Street teamed up with GfK to ask Gen-Yers what they value in a workplace in order to determine which companies truly stood out. They visited each company nominated to dig deeper and uncover what made each a great place for Gen Y. Then, using a proprietary mathematical model developed by GfK companies were ranked on a 300-point scale based on the key attributes that Gen-Yers identified as important in the workplace, including:

  • Percentage of workforce comprised of Generation Y talent
  • Position on social media use in the workplace
  • Overall environment
  • Advancement potential
  • Nature of day-to-day work
  • Work/life balance
  • Social responsibility
  • Benefits package, including vacation time and salary package
  • Flexible working hours
  • Employee voice in pitching new ideas
  • Training and development programs

While the companies that top the list focus on companies in the Chicagoland area, many of these firms offer nationwide and or global opportunities for Gen-Y employees. They also offer interesting lessons for any employer looking to connect with this important segment.
